The confrontation between Will Smith and Chris Rock at the Oscars has been discussed around the world in the days since. So many have had their say on the comedian’s joke and on the actor’s decision to respond by slapping Rock on the stage. Now, Jada Pinkett Smith has broken her silence and shared a message on social media.
It was a mysterious and cryptic message, with no caption and just an image with some text.”This is a season for healing and I’m here for it,” the message on Jada Pinkett Smith’s Instagram said, with the post earning hundreds of thousands of likes from her nearly 12 million followers and others. It was after Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair-loss condition alopecia that Will Smith marched on to the stage to confront the comedian.
While Pinkett Smith didn’t say anything during the controversial moment, she was very much at the centre of it. Her husband Will Smith released an apology on Tuesday, expressing his regret at the way he acted.”Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive,” Smith said in a statement, also posted on Instagram.”My behaviour at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.
“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong.
“I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. “I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us.”I am a work in progress.”
